Georgia produces some of the world’s most natural and flavourful teas

The tea community here are reviving a lost craft and industry. The bushes planted during the Soviet tea boom were left to grow wild for 30 years without any fertilisers, pesticides or other inputs.

Georgia’s northerly climate means that the common pests of the tea bush do not survive the winter, meaning pesticides are not needed.

Our growers use organic methods and hand craft tea in small batches.

Green Teas

  • Chinuli Green, from Georgia

    Chinuli, Samegrelo

Vibrant, flat shaped leaves. This is made in a similar way to Lonjing Dragon Well Tea from China, a style known as ‘Emperor’s Tea’.

Fresh grassy aroma; nutty, clean flavour. A very distinctive green tea.

  • Classic Green tea, from Georgia

    Classic Green, Ozurgeti

The Gold Standard of Georgian greens. Founding members of the Organic Tea Growers’ Association, these leaves lead the way in regenerative farming.

Rich lemon, mown grass aroma; floral, mint flavour and long aftertaste.

  • Mtsvane Okro, green tea from Georgia

    Argonaut's Green, Ozurgeti

A classically Georgian green., hand picked from the hills near Georgia’s Tea City, Ozurgeti. We can fulfil extremely large orders with this tea, though it is still made with artisanal methods in small batches.

The early grapefruit aroma gives way to fruity, marzipan and floral flavours.

Black and Red Teas

  • Megrelian Red, tea from Georgia

    Megrelian Red, Samegrelo

An exceptional red tea. Long, twisted leaves, not fully oxidised to give a gorgeous red colour. Spring, early and late summer flushes are available.

May is more delicate and fruity, August richer and nuttier. Aromas of orange zest and bread; roasted hazelnut flavours. Rich ruby colour, particularly August harvest.

  • Mountain Black Tea, from Imereti, Georgia.

    Twisted Mountain Black Tea, Imereti

An exceptional black tea from Imereti. This is Georgia’s highest altitude plantation; the bushes remain under snow until late spring, which gives this and the white tea extra richness from the slow growth.

Rich, caramel and biscuity aroma and taste. Magnificent deep red colour.

  • Classic Black tea, from Georgia

    Classic Black tea, Guria

Some of the ecologically best tea in Georgia and indeed the world. With the Organic Tea Producers’ Association’s strict standards, these are grown in a highly regenerative farming system.

Lovely, delicate aroma and flavour, low in tannin. Honey and fresh, woody notes.

  • Wild, forest grown black tea from Georgia

Wild, Forest Grown Black Tea, Imereti

An exceptionally rare tea. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, tea plantations were abandoned. Some have become wild, biodiverse forests, where these teas are harvested from tall tea trees once, or at most twice per year.

Light, spiced honey aroma; gentle sweetness, with a long, bitter finish.

  • Ori Daa

Ori Da: Two Sisters' Black tea, Ozurgeti

A black tea from two of our favourite tea characters! A limited production from the family’s recently restored tea plantation.

Classic Georgian woody, bakery notes. Smooth and semi-savoury. If tea could be a buttered croissant, this would be it.

White, Oolong and other teas

  • White tea from Georgia

    Tippy white tea, Imereti

The earliest buds are picked soon after the snows melt at this high altitude plantation. A white tea is the best way to sample terroir and the slow, late growth makes this white tea very special.

    Gentle, yet intense. Leafy aroma.

  • Twisted Oolong, Tsalenjikha. Oolong tea from Georgia

    Twisted Oolong, Tsalenjikha

A rich, dark oolong with with a pale orange colour. This is Nargiza’s speciality. Twice rolled and fired by hand in a wok, this is truly and artisanal tea.

    Beautiful light orange colour.

    MADE BY: Nargiza, August 2022

  • Wild, Forest Grown White Tea, Imereti

An exceptionally rare tea. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, tea plantations were abandoned. Some have become wild, biodiverse forests, where these teas are harvested from tall tea trees once, or at most twice per year.

MADE BY: Grigoli and Elguja, May 2022

Herbal, Botanical and Fermented Tisanes

  • Wild Blueberry leaf

    Wild Blueberry leaf tea, Imereti

Wild blueberry leaves, harvested in the Imeretian mountains.

These rolled twisted leaves are made with the black tea process, rolling and fermenting the leaves to make a rich tea.

Fruity aroma. Black tea flavour with a strong lemony kick. Weaker brews have a delicious Nuri-like marine flavour, but we always drink it strong.

  • Wild Blueberry leaf, Gomismta, Guria

    Wild Blueberry leaf, Gomismta, Guria

Artisanal black tea alternative, wild blueberry leaves have been fermented into tea in Georgia for centuries.

Cirtus, fruity aroma. Black tea flavour, with tangy lemon/orange flavour. A very classic example of this type of tea.

MADE BY: Dato and Gabrieli, April 2022

  • Gabrieli's Green tea, from Georgia

    Fermented Blackberry Leaf, Lechkhumi

A Nela-Nela flagship! Whole blackberry leaves, plucked from the slopes of Mt. Kvamli and Askhi. They are orthodox rolled and oxidised like a mild red tea.

Rich flavour reminiscent of a woody red tea. Tannic if overbrewed, they are just enough to give it an edge for anyone looking to switch to a caffeine-free tea hit. Floral and grassy, like freshly cut woodland undergrowth, slightly rosey.

    CERTIFIED ORGANIC

  • Mulberry leaf tea

    Fermented Mulberry Leaf, Lechkhumi

Nela-Nela’s signature tea and our best seller by far. The young leaves from rewilding white mulberry trees, a hangover of silk production in Lechkhumi are rolled and partially oxidised like an oolong tea.

Rich and nutty, chocolate aroma and taste and thick texture. Mulberry leaves contain a compound which slows the uptake of sugar into the blood, so is known to be useful for diabetics.

We just love it for the flavour though.

  • Fermented Quince leaf, Lechkhumi

Mmm… quince. One of the well known teas of rural Georgia. This quince leaf tea is made only once per year in early spring.

Deep yellow, caramel colour. Almond-like flavour and very delicious. Downy leaves.

    CERTIFIED ORGANIC

  • Acacia flowers, Ozurgeti

You didn’t see that coming, did you?!

These flowers are deliciously… well, floral… and honey sweet.

A lovely, light tisane with oodles of flavour and looks it looks so beautiful and flowery. A sure favourite!

  • Fermented Raspberry Leaf, Kakheti

Fingers crossed for the 2023 harvest - this tea is stunning, but dependent on the August weather..

This is richer and more tea-like than a conventional raspberry leaf tea. Well known for use in pregnancy, this one is more delicious! Very good blended with a bit of mint too.

  • Green tea style Wild Blueberry Leaf, Gomismta, Guria

Lemony, and fresh; this is divine - but subtle. An incredibly difficult process with these leaves, but one maker has perfected the method.

Light, strongly lemon, citrus fruit flavour with the feel of a green or white tea - yet a natural caffeine-free tisane.

The growers and makers

While bringing you Nela-Nela, we dived deep into the tea community of Georgia

It is actually the best part of running our company: we’re very excited to share these connections and experiences with you.

Nargiza told us in Tsalenjika how there used to be four factories there. The whole town used to smell of tea.

We want to share the remarkable, little known teas from this magical land and we hope that all the people who you see on this page can continue to develop some of the world’s great teas.

We really just want to see this tea community and industry thrive once again.

We will put you in touch with the best growers and producers for your needs. We can arrange for you to source and try teas from artisanal producers right through to machine cut, rolled or CTC teas. Our favourite hand picked teas are listed above.

We source from producers whose plantations and factories we have visited and who we know can produce consistent, delicious teas and whose teams we would want to be a part of.

Price, Shipping and FAQs

Contact us directly

We’ll work out what we can do for you. We’re very happy to take you to visit the plantation and growers and put you in touch with them directly.

We provide transparent invoicing in which you will see exactly the price that is paid to the farmers. We can also facilitate you buying directly from tea farmers. We believe in short, personal supply chains.

With Nela-Nela, we have been through every stage of tea logistics in Georgia: from sourcing, to packaging design and production and export. We know who has which teas, machines and expertise, so please do get in touch.

We are happy to arrange white-label orders and we can help you through the process of exporting, shipping and importing too.

But I’m a café, can I serve your tea?

Contact us with your requirements and we will put you in touch with the best people to fulfil your needs. We don’t hold stocks of tea, instead commissioning batches from tea farmers. Consequently smaller, regular orders are difficult for us to guarantee year-round, but we know people who can.

Please note that teas listed as ‘organic method’ are not certified as organic by UK/EU approved certification bodies. It’s simply too expensive for small farmers. This is normal within the direct-from-farmer tea industry - Rare Tea and Postcard Tea, for example, offer similar promises with organic-method teas.

Teas listed as ‘CERTIFIED ORGANIC’ have internationally approved certification.
